Our own reviewer here at GameWatcher found the game to be one of the best romps through history of any in the Hearts of Iron IV series and graced it with a lofty.Of course, when you’ve learned all of history’s nooks and crannies and wish to augment its rich tapestry further, it may be time for mods. What if you could take on a game where the United States didn’t have a massive stranglehold on the entire Western Hemisphere? This mod makes it possible by removing guarantees from a 1936 start by making them far too expensive to gain with political power. That means no Monroe Doctrine and no Pax Americana.
Furthermore, Italy will no longer have its guarantee on Albania. This world is about to shift power with a various countries staying out of the business of others at extremely crucial moments in time. Be there to see it happen and take advantage./ Created by Erwin Von Rommel. Would you like to have some level of agency or even play from the perspective of the various nations that were combined under the state of the Soviet Union? This mod makes it possible. Under this mod, each Soviet State becomes their own country separate of Russia with their own generic focus trees (though they’ll still start as puppet extensions of the Motherland). Can you take on one of these nations and break the control of Russia on your land or will you fall in line and be there when the Kremlin calls on you?/ Created by TheCrafterESP.
Did you ever want to create your own nation by way of your political and military prowess, outside the lines of the major players of the world? This is a updated version of the popular Realistic Progression Mod for Hearts of Iron III. Reworked for Hearts of Iron IV. This one is meant to supply an enormous wealth of new models, equipment, and units for all naval, air, and land units without doing any harm to the regular performance of the vanilla game.
This mod is set to supply the most comprehensive change in combat visuals and availability we’ve seen yet in the wide universe of Hearts of Iron IV mods and it will only continue to get better./ Created by Kallar Duskwood. The world moved on after World War I, but not the way you expected. In this distorted timeline, the Central Powers prevailed. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire succeeded in victory against the Triple Entente. Nations rose and fell and history was rewritten. Now, you will take the reins of a nation in this parallel world and lead them through numerous events of the altered timeline. Will you make one of the Central Powers a glorious and unstoppable juggernaut in world affairs or will you attempt to rise from the shame of defeat and become something from nothing in this misshapen world?/ Created by Dr Halo Smith.
If you’d like sensible decisions out of your adversaries and allies when it comes to the Peace Conference function of Hearts of Iron IV, this mod might help you on your way. It adjusts the AIs of most players to be more in line with what their military and political motivations should be in accordance with history. More sensible strategic demands will be made (like not demanding land the nation has no immediate access to) and, overall, other nations will use the Peace Conference to often gain the upper hand in ways that will actually be beneficial to them./ Created by Santilian. War was just one part of the equation that brought the rise and fall of nations.
When technology went too far and the Infection happened, everything became survival. This mod brings a zombie outbreak to Hearts of Iron IV. The Horde will spread outward and kill and ravage until every last person is infected.
It’s the duty of the surviving nations to put their differences aside and bring this terrifying threat to an end. Will you help save the world or will your nation crumble and burn with it?/ Created by Valentin Gopnik. Ever get tired of looking at infantry equipment for the lesser involved nations of the world during Hearts of Iron IV’s active period and seeing nothing but generic, disappointingly bland gear on them? This mod aims to bring a little more authenticity to the world. It replaces and renames equipment of every single country in the game to be as appropriate as can be. No longer will you see Weapon 1 or Weapon 2.
Every country with an armed force will have named equipment the way it ought to be./ Created by LukyLucaz. Tired of running short on what you need to continue your war effort? Getting sick of looking at Europe and feeling like precious materials run just a little too scarce there?
This mod offers a soft solution. In an effort to rebalance the game, this mod increases the amount of resources that can be found throughout the world, especially around Europe.
Don’t find yourself caught up in barren wastelands with nothing to fuel your factories, use this mod and create the great armies you’ve always wanted in theatres otherwise left scarce./ Created by MajesticLemmings. This is the World War I mod to end all World War I mods.
Cheekiness aside, this mod presents a scenario that places players right at the routes of the War to End Wars. As the European nations and royalties gear up to feed their brave men to the war machine, you’ll be able to take one of the many nations directly involved or try to keep your nation alive through the conflict. Will you preserve the defeat of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire or will you write a new chapter in history on the backs of the Central Powers?/ Created by Ted52. If you’ve ever wanted to test your tactical prowess against an AI that cares far more for the most efficient path to supremacy rather than preserving historical accuracy, this is the mod to go all-in on. It overhauls the AI of the game to make smart decisions about where its industry will go, regardless of how actual events turned out. Many nations are balanced and reworked to pursue tactically advantageous techs, fortifications, research, and production. If you’re ready to play to win, so is this mod./ Created by Darzall.
Ever got into the sci-fi mystique of the many takes on the iconic War of the Worlds novels, films, and broadcasts? Have we got a mod for you. Taking inspiration from the 1938 broadcasts, the popular H.G. Wells book, and the 2005 movie, this mod allows to play as or against a new Martian invasion. As the Martians attempt to overtake national superpowers, will you withstand these terrifying invaders or will you take up the role of the galactic aggressors to crush the puny Earth resistances?/ Created by Roflbinflood. Do you enjoy the hand-drawn visages of historical figures or do you want the face of the real fellow in your command window?
If you’re a history buff that enjoys the latter of these two, then this mod will delight you. It replaces the commander, general, and officer portraits of most major nations with historical portraits of their real-life counterparts.
Nothing against the artists, but to see the actual faces of the figures that rose to power and prominence during this chaotic time lends some level of awe to the game based on their campaigns./ Created by Steffen. Ah, to have a fine naval fleet at your fingertips! It must be great to carry the strength and pride of the seas on your side! That is, it usually is until air raids start occurring one after another and you’re punished with a gauntlet of annoying naval alarms. Good news though: With this mod you won’t go insane or have to buy ear plugs. It will take the annoying high-pitched naval alarm and reduce it to something more pleasant. You’ll still get the message, but you don’t have to suffer extensively for it./ Created by Viriathus.
Naval commanders and counter-strategists rejoice, we’ve got a mod that will make naval warfare quite a bit more strategic. Making use of the land fortresses that can lock down a narrow body of water such as the Danish Straits and Gibraltar, this mod adds quite a few additions to which that situation will apply. Players and AI can now lock down naval passage in quite a few new locations that they couldn’t before, offering a deeper relevance to naval warfare and strategic land territories./ Created by Lorgan. Before Hearts of Iron IV’s release, there were different values in place on how much manpower one could gain from conscription laws. It was lessened for the sake of balance, but where’s the fun in that?
If you agree with that notion, then this modder agrees with you. The mod supplies the former values to the game, increasing manpower gains from conscription laws. They might be pretty mad you slam them in uniform, but at least you’ll have as many of those troops as you can get. When the world entered its second war to end all wars, where did you stand? Were you with the might of the fascist Germany, the cold revenge of Soviet Russia, the liberty of the UK and American forces, or simply a smaller nation staying afloat in the chaos?
Whatever your cause, we hope we were able to provide you with some new tools to build your forces and survive the gauntlet. If not, check back soon. New content is coming every day from the mod community and you can be sure that if it’s good, we’ll bring it here for your convenience.

OK, I know this is literally the worst day possible to do this since Waking the Tiger comes out tomorrow and will break all of these mods for a while, but I have been so impressed by HOI IV's mod scene, I felt compelled to share my experiences. Here are a list of alt-history mods that I recommend you all check out. All of the mods on this list will give you hours of enjoyment, and let you experience a very different scenario than the vanilla game.KaiserreichObviously, this has to be at the top of the list.
Truly, the King of the modding scene not just for HOI IV, but perhaps for all Paradox games. Kaiserreich lets the player explored a fully-fleshed out world where Germany won the Great War and it is just absolutely, absurdly wonderful. It benefits from arguably the best focus trees out there, even better than the ones in vanilla, and the scenario is incredibly replayable, with every game feeling fresh with different circumstances for you to react to (who won the Spanish civil war this time? Oh, and shit the Soviet Union has taken over in Russia. But wait, good old Huey Long is about to win the American Civil War! It is just so good, and it is only in alpha!
The devs post very frequent diaries, and the Kaiserreich subreddit is one of the most fun and memey places on Reddit.Recommended Nations: Russia, Ottoman Empire, CanadaRed WorldRed World takes place in a world where the Soviets won the Cold War and America collapsed in the late 80s. It has a world with a fun and interesting lore, and some of the best writing I have seen in a mod. It has a tone that alternates between seriousness and tongue-in-cheek memery in a way that is incredibly endearing.
Best Alternative History Mods Hoi4
There are things in this game that had me literally laughing out loud, and how certain contemporary figures are used in the mod is utterly brilliant. My only complaint is that very few countries have their own focus trees yet, with some major countries like Germany or France having generic ones, and you are kind of spoiled with so many flavor events in the first couple years, that when all of these well-written events finally taper off, it kind of disappointing. Still though, as a work in progress, we can hope that this changes in the near future. The game is based on the tech tree of the Modern Day mod (more on that one later). It also has an amazing music submod that is absolutely essential. I wish the devs were a bit more active in posting updates on this one, but just the sheer brilliance and wit of what we have so far gives this one the number two spot on my list.Recommended Nations: American Commonwealth (do the 'fire the governor' path, trust me), American Republic, ItalyMillennium DawnOK, this one isn't technically 'alt-history' but it has a lot of alt-history aspects.
Millennium Dawn has the player take control of any of earth's nations as of the year 2000. It is a bit more serious in tone compared to Red World, but doesn't shy away from giving the player some fun options like restoring the Holy Roman Empire or Italy's merchant republics. My only major beef is that the tech tree feels a bit unsatisfying and in need of being fleshed out, but it is a great bit of fun, and exploring the ridiculous number of ideologies in the game allows a lot of re-playability. The high level of polish in this one earns it number three on my list.Recommended Nations: Germany, United Kingdom, ISISCold War: The Iron Curtain - A World DividedI would give this one the 'most underrated' award as I very rarely hear people talk about it but it is perhaps HOI's best-kept secret.
The mod is still early in development, and a lot of things are missing (ministers, unique generals, certain artwork) but it has an incredible number of unique focus trees, I was shocked by how many nations already have their own. Moreover, the focus trees are generally very well done. It also has an amazing soundtrack, featuring music from the cancelled East vs West. In fact, this game is very much the East vs West game that you always wanted. It uses an interesting Defcon system and actually models Nukes in a realistic and intimidating way (They actually kill population!). There is an awesome space race tech tree too!Recommended Nations: Germany (restoring the Reich!), Israel, JapanOld World BluesThis one is a bit different than the rest of the entries on my list, but I think it is a brilliant piece of work.
The mod lets you play as any of the factions in the Fallout Universe's post-apocalyptic United States. It is currently restricted to the west coast but the devs have indicated that that will change in the future. It has a number of unique focus trees, all of which are super well done and are steeped in the Fallout lore.
The music mod is also essential and adds all of your favorite tunes (including hits like Atom Bomb Baby and Bongo Bongo Bongo I Don't Want to Leave the Congo).Recommended Nations: New Vegas, Caesar's Legion, NCRApres Moi, Les DelugeAs opposed to many of the other mods on this list, this one takes a much earlier point of departure, letting the player experience a world where Napoleon had emerged victorious in his wars in the early 19th century. As a result, it is a world that has little resemblance to our historical timeline, which makes for a very different experience. My only issue with this one is that the focus trees all feel pretty generic, but it is a well-imagined world, and a lot of fun to play.Recommended Nations: Teutonic Reich, LouisianaIn the Name of the TsarThis one looks at a world where Russia won the Great War, with its monarchy intact and the Bolshevik revolution averted. The player must face a world where Russia is now the world's preeminent super power. Another great mod, with a world that is just different enough to make things really interesting.Recommended Nations: Tsardom of Russia, Prussia-Future mods to look out for!-FuhrerreichA brilliant concept based on an event that takes place in Kaisrreich, Fuhrerreich imagines a world where Germany lost the Great War but through the lens of how the people of the Kaiserreich universe would imagine such a universe to be. From posts on the subreddit, it sounds like the mod should be out very soon, probably in a month or so.The New OrderThis mod will let the player experience a world where Germany won World War II, and the player faces a crumbling Nazi world order.
Everything the devs have posted looks super polished and amazing, but they were unable to even confirm the mod would be out this year. This one will be more of a long term prospect, but definitely worth watching out for.-Mods to Avoid-The Great War:I so dearly wanted to like this mod, but the combat system is fairly busted (try even denting the Belgium line in 1914 as Germany) and the events are infuriatingly railroady, like even worse than Victoria 1.
Moreover, the mod seems to be abandoned by the devs, so I would avoid wasting your time on this one.Phew, that was longer than I expected, but hopefully it gave you some new ideas for mods to subscribe to!Many thanks to all of our amazing mod developers, keep up the great work!. Modding seems to be quite stressful. Imagine working at Paradox, but with completely chaotic and variating hours, no-show co-workers (sometimes) and absolutely 0 pay, while also working another separate job. That's HOI4 modders. No, not the little tiny submodders and flag changers. That's the guys working on KR, OWB, CBTS, MD4 (to name a few), yenno, biiiiiig mods.I don't actually know firsthand what its like, but I reckon it can be kinda like this:Guy has idea for mod.Guy gets team together.Team enthusiasm lasts about 2-3 weeks.Guy has to keep pushing some/a few of the other guys to make sure they actually fucking contribute.Stressedout.pngGuy develops reputation as a hard and bitchy person.but I've never modded even the tiniest thing on HOI4 so idk maybe I'm completely wrong.
Top Hoi4 Mods
If we're going to list promising mods that aren't released yet, I'd also recommend looking at Calm Before The Storm, a total overhaul of the base game, starting in 1933, using Kaiserreich style mechanics. There's huge potential for both super detailed historical playthroughs and totally nuts alt history paths, for example Germany is going to get 3 separate focus trees for a radical right wing path, communist path, and democratic path. Each one of those is going to have a handful of options, for example the radical right will have the Monarchists, a Military Dictatorship path, the Nationalists, Nazis, and the Strasserists.
