If it was more RPG oriented, killing patrols should trigger a conversation with the elder where you have to talk your way out of it:P Or something like New Vegas where you had your reputation with each faction. Basically this game has no consequence whatsoever to your actions Which is great less frustrations and hassle, ruining your game.

Good question. These days it's hard to say. Once upon a time it was about technology. Controlling it so it couldn't destroy us again.

Energy weapons and power armor are usually tops on our list, although I appreciate anything that's vintage. But that all seems so limited now. We haven't grown or adapted.

And now we're stuck in a hole, not carrying out our mission.” —, on the purpose of the Brotherhood in the 23rd century (2281)Brotherhood of Steel (commonly abbreviated to BoS) is a techno- military order located in and operating across the ruins of post-War with its roots stemming from the and the government-sponsored scientific community from former before the, dedicated to controlling and regulating technology in the wasteland. Though small, the Brotherhood has been an influential group in the history of the wasteland, first as a survivalist group, then a major research and development house, then finally as the enemy of the, fighting a in.

Having suffered defeats in the West, the Brotherhood would be strengthened on the Eastern reaches of the continent, under Elder. The faction has featured in one form or another in every Fallout game. See:, The Mariposa Rebellion In 2076, the NBC division of achieved breakthrough results in the Project. The United States Defense Department, in fear of international espionage, moved a military team under the command of Colonel and Captain onto the site to secure and oversee the project, now dubbed the FEV project. On January 7, 2077, all FEV research was moved to the newly constructed to commence testing of the virus on human subjects. The security team was transferred to the newly constructed base as well, to provide protection for the research going on within the facility. They were not informed of the nature of the research. The situation unraveled shortly before October 10, 2077. Through unknown means, the soldiers stationed at Mariposa discovered the fact that the scientists under their care were performing experiments with the on military prisoners.

The revelation prompted a nervous breakdown in Colonel Spindel, who locked himself in his office. Captain Maxson was the only officer left to handle the deteriorating situation. Soldiers were screaming for blood and the whole situation was at risk of devolving into an anarchistic bloodbath. On October 12, when Maxson had to step in to prevent one of his subordinates from killing a member of the science team, he ordered interrogations of the science team under his authority as acting commander. He hoped to prevent a full mutiny by offering his troops a semblance of justice. The first scientist was brought before Maxson a day later, on October 13. Chief Researcher explained that human experiments at the facility were sanctioned by the government. He outlined the program to the Captain, emphasizing the fact that it was the government that ordered.

When Maxson refused to believe him, the scientist lost his nerve and started screaming how he was just following orders and that he was a military man just like Maxson. The Captain shot him in response. He rationalized it as trying to prevent a full-scale mutiny, but even he didn't believe it.The killing of Robert Anderson effectively established Maxson as the leader of the rebellion. His position was further reinforced just two days later on October 15, when he attempted to speak to Colonel Spindel through the door of his office.

It soon became clear that the Colonel had lost touch with reality, so Maxson and several of his men broke down the door just in time to hear the Colonel apologize and shoot himself. Subsequent scientist interrogations invariably ended in executions. Held out the longest by October 18, finally convincing the Captain that the experiments were really ordered by the government with her detailed account.

On October 20, 2077, Captain Maxson declared his unit in full secession from the United States over the radio, attempting to force the government to respond to the situation at Mariposa. No response came.

A day later, he ordered the families of soldiers under his command to take shelter within the facility. On October 23, 2077, the struck. As Maxson was halfway through prying the story from Head Researcher, the facility lost contact with the outside world as nuclear weapons started to drop. Spared the nuclear devastation, Mariposa protected the inhabitants from nuclear fallout flooding the wasteland. Fearing that would soon make up for the oversight, on October 24, Maxson ordered his soldiers and their families to prepare to vacate the base the next day.On October 25, Sergeant volunteered to take atmospheric readings outside the base. Reporting no significant amounts of in the atmosphere, final preparations for the exodus were undertaken. On October 26, Maxson ordered the remains of the scientists to be buried in the wastes outside the base. A day later, on October 27, former US servicemen and their families left the base under the lead of Captain Roger Maxson, heading for the government bunker in the south.

The Exodus. Government bunker. In November, a few weeks later, war refugees arrived at the bunker. The people suffered casualties along the way, as while the soldiers were protected by, their families had no armor to speak of. Marauders that attacked the caravan on its quickly learned to target the unprotected civilians. Though the attackers paid with two lives for every one they took, many were lost, including 's wife (but not his teenage son).Several soldiers broke off during the Exodus as well, led by Sergeant. Ignoring warnings from Captain Maxson and defying the group's will, Allen's faction separated from the convoy in order to excavate the remains of the West Tek Research Facility using their power armor. They were never heard from again.

Around 2151, the Brotherhood sent out Knights to seek out Allen's group or its remains. All they found were desolate ruins. The Exodus survivors claimed the Lost bunker as their own.

The refugees expanded and adapted it to fit their own needs, becoming a bastion of technology in a world that has lost centuries of technological development overnight. Maxson also needed to find someone in, to gain badly needed answers.

Using surviving satellite connections, he reached out across the continent, broadcasting a request for contact. By chance, Maxson found an old friend there, Lieutenant of the US Army Rangers. Although initially hesitant to trust him, due to the public declaration of secession, she gambled and left the channel open. As Maxson revealed the depth of atrocities perpetrated by the United States government, Taggerdy's faith in the system was shaken, then dismantled. Following the winter spent at, she joined Maxson's banner. Foundation of the Brotherhood. “Words have power, Lizzy.

They build identity. They take on a meaning if you keep using them, even if it didn't exist to begin with. It was the Knights and Scribes after the fall of Rome that protected what was left of Western civilization.

So we are the new Knights and our role is similar. But we'll need more than names. We'll need new traditions, our own, well, mythology. Something people can believe to their core.” — toWitnessing how people around him slowly succumbed to depression, Captain Maxson formulated a new ideology for the survivors. It took him years to create it, replacing the tarnished Stars and Stripes with new symbols, new ranks, and new ideas to replace the ones scorched in nuclear fire.

They would provide meaning for people before they became lost in the depths of despair after losing their friends, family, their entire world. Although some under his command, particularly Lieutenant Taggerdy, were skeptical of his plans, Maxson believed that the way forward lay in new traditions and a new mythology, free of the burden of the past. He also believed that it would prevent any surviving politicians from exercising their authority over former American soldiers, especially. By June 20, 2082, all members under his command switched over to using Brotherhood ranks and practices. As the Brotherhood in developed, so did the sister organization in, under Paladin Lizzy Taggerdy.

Although she showed a bias towards candidates with a military background while building up the ranks, she eventually understood Roger Maxson's vision. And continued to expand and develop the organization using as a training outpost. Despite initial resistance to the new rank system by the rest in her outfit, the new ideas offered by Maxson eventually took root and were accepted. Although the Brotherhood's insistence on acquiring munitions for their fighting against mutants has led to ruffled feathers - especially with the prior to the flood in December 2082 - they eventually found a common tongue, standing together during the Battle of Huntersville in May 2086.

Although the Brotherhood sustained losses, it prevailed. This coincided with the announcement of a new mandate by Roger Maxson: The preservation of technology, to gather, record, and save the collective knowledge of mankind for future generation, to act as a catalyst for the rebirth of civilization in time. Some responded to this new policy with enthusiasm, others with grudging acceptance, and yet others, like Sergeant, left the Brotherhood to join the. The new mission quickly took a backseat, however, as the Brotherhood encountered the and the in the. Conferring with Maxson's ace researcher, Scribe, the Brotherhood in Appalachia quickly calculated that the scorchbeasts represented a potential extinction event for humanity.

Lost Hills supplied a number of designs and weapon schematics to help stem the tide, including a sonic generator and an automated research program, but by the 2090s, the failing infrastructure of the Old World rapidly rendered communication impossible. Before being cut-off, Maxson ordered Taggerdy to hold the tide - and proscribed the use of nuclear weapons.Eventually, the communications failed entirely, separating Lost Hills from Appalachia. The chapter in Appalachia fought on, trying to destroy the scorchbeasts through attrition, but by 2093, their numbers dwindled to the point where they were forced to close down, their first base, and focus their remaining forces at. Declining support from the and the constant fighting just to stem the tide of the scorched and their masters took their toll, preventing the Brotherhood from completing the automated research program at, supplied to them by Takano. Eventually, the Brotherhood launched Operation Touchdown. This last ditch effort was launched in January 2095 and briefly stemmed the tide at the cost of the entire strike force, which included Knight Moreno and Paladin Taggerdy. Ultimately however, the Brotherhood in Appalachia was wiped out in their last stand at and Thunder Mountain on August 18-19, 2095, marking the end of the Brotherhood in Appalachia.

Conflict with the Vipers In 2135, Roger Maxson died of cancer. Already a legendary figure to the Brotherhood, he was essentially deified as the Founder and Deliverer. His son, replaced him as the High Elder, while his grandson, joined the Paladin caste, showing great promise. Around 2141, the Brotherhood ceased admitting new members from the outside, relying solely on their natural growth for increasing their numbers. The Brotherhood was a major power in the region at this point, firmly exercising their control on the lands surrounding their bunker and forming trade relations with the neighboring towns, especially the. However, the focus on hard sciences gave in to the detriment of humanities, history in particular. This decline in soft sciences eventually lead to some Initiates of the youngest generations having no idea who was. In 2150, they clashed with the newly reformed.

The battles intensified in subsequent years, culminating in the death of High Elder in 2155. John Maxson's father expected the raiders to break formation and flee when faced with Brotherhood warriors clad in powered armor, but did not account for their religious ferocity. A poisoned arrow nicked him when his helmet was off, and he died within hours. John Maxson was promoted to the Elder council, while Rhombus was tasked with conducting a campaign of extermination against the Vipers. The Paladins tracked down and wiped out almost all of their members within the span of a month. A handful of Vipers were able to flee north and east into the mountain range; While small groups continued to exist and raid in, they never regained their full power. Both Rhombus and John Maxson would eventually ascend to leadership roles, with John Maxson becoming the High Elder in 2159 and promoting Rhombus to the role of Head Paladin.During the campaign, the Brotherhood sent a few scouts and emissaries to the Hub to track down Vipers members, and from these beginnings, the Hub and the Brotherhood began full trade relations.

Caravans had delivered to the Brotherhood before, but not long after the destruction of the Vipers, caravan trains ran directly from the Hub to the Brotherhood on a regular basis. While the situation remained peaceful and prosperous, issues would develop between the and the Brotherhood from time to time.

In the late 2150s, the Water Merchants of the Hub attempted to barter a large quantity of water for a weapons stockpile. Although the Brotherhood turned down the offer, the merchants attempted to take the weapons regardless. The thieves were caught, but the Brotherhood Elders voted down a retaliatory expedition.

The Emergence of the Unity In 2161, the Brotherhood discovered the presence of a new enemy. In October, a group of Knights on a patrol in the badlands discovered a dead.

After examining the creature, Master Scribe determined that it was sterile, but also notes that there must have been a central location that created these mutants. The Elder Council, fearing a potential invasion, enacted several security decrees, including a moratorium on training new recruits until the threat passed. The Elders also sent out several scouts north and east into the badlands. Only one returned from the east, reporting an encounter with twenty super mutants, and none at all returned from the north. The Council could not reach an agreement on how to act.

Even as Hub merchant caravans started disappearing in the northern wastes, the Elders refused to act until they were fully certain that there was an army massing in the northern mountains. The impasse was broken by the arrival of the. Having rescued a Brotherhood Initiate from bandits in the, the Dweller visited the Brotherhood and accepted the mission to the, to recover the disk belonging to Sergeant to learn the fate of the splinter faction from the Mariposa Rebellion. The Dweller surprised everyone by surviving and returning with the artifact. He became the first outsider to join the Brotherhood in nearly twenty years. The Brotherhood shared what knowledge they had and some of their advanced technology with the Dweller, allowing him to seek out the and destroy him in the. Following the death of the super mutant leader, the Brotherhood further aided the Vault Dweller's quest, sending a team of crack assault Paladins to storm Mariposa. Apex of Power, Stagnation, and Recovery. Architect of Brotherhood's peaceful expansion.Following the destruction of the, the Brotherhood aided other human settlements to drive the mutants away with minimal loss of life on both sides of the conflict.

The Brotherhood remained out of the power structure for a time, becoming a major research and development house and reintroducing advanced technology into New California at a slow pace. The wise guidance of arguably brought the Brotherhood to the zenith of its power. The Brotherhood had good relations with the developing, to the point that one of the states of the federation was named after the founder of the Brotherhood:. However, was never incorporated into the NCR.Over the years the Brotherhood grew confident in its status as the sole source of advanced technology left to mankind, and allowed it's prominence and influence to wane, growing stagnant.

This stagnancy made them unable to deal with the technologically superior, when the Brotherhood learned of its existence circa 2240. In order to learn more about them, the Brotherhood reactivated a network of outposts in Northern California to observe Enclave activity. Thanks to their low profile, they achieved practical anonymity, even in the populous.Once the Enclave was destroyed by the, the Brotherhood was without a foe to face. In an effort to end the stagnation the Brotherhood expanded eastward (most notably the formation of the under Elder ) and sent out expeditions to recover technology, going as far as the in 2255, with the expedition under Senior Paladin. The Brotherhood War. Main article:The rampant expansionism of the NCR would eventually lead to a collision course with the Brotherhood. As the NCR's power grew, the Brotherhood adopted a policy of reclaiming technology from people outside the order, energy weapons most of all.

The disagreements over the way technology should be handled eventually resulted in full out war with the New California Republic. The Brotherhood was eventually forced into a retreat.

At least six Brotherhood bunkers were lost to the Republic, four of them destroyed by the Brotherhood themselves in a last ditch attempt to deny them to the enemy. The most spectacular known confrontation occurred during the Brotherhood's in 2276. Under Elder Elijah's leadership, the Mojave chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel was operating out of the solar power plant of when the NCR launched an attack. The NCR's numerical superiority over the Brotherhood, coupled with Elder Elijah's immense reluctance to leave Helios, allowed the NCR to overwhelm the defenders, leading to the loss of over half the chapter. The Mojave chapter of the Brotherhood was considered effectively neutralized. The Mojave chapter went under lockdown following their defeat at and the retreat to.Despite their crushing victory over the Brotherhood, the war would serve to cost the NCR dearly. Apart from losses in manpower and materiel, the greatest victim of the war was the Republic's economy.

The Republic's gold reserves were completely destroyed by Brotherhood raids: new gold coins could not be minted and paper money could not be properly backed with gold. NCR citizens panicked and rushed to reclaim the listed face value of currency from NCR's remaining gold reserves. Since the NCR was unable to realize these withdrawals, particularly towards the frontier, faith in their currency considerably dropped.

To protect against actual economic collapse, the NCR government abandoned the gold standard and established, not payable in specie. Since then many wastelanders lost faith in it as a medium of worth, both as a result of it not being backed by anything but the government's word and the inevitable inflation. In response to the loss of faith, merchant consortiums of the Hub established their own currency, the veritable, backing it with a standardized measure of water. The Brotherhood in the Capital.

The elders form the Brotherhood's ruling council. Individual elders are occasionally leaders of localized splinter chapters of the Brotherhood. Under normal circumstances, the ability to become an elder is reserved for paladins, although there are exceptions, such as Elder Elijah, who was a scribe.GeneralGenerals control all of the Brotherhood's military. They report to the high elder and the Elder Council and will only make a move if it's approved by them. Desktop is not available windows 10. They obtain the title of general by showing outstanding performance in military tactics and combat. They help decide the titles of the most promising recruits from initiates and squires all the way up to the head paladin and head knight.Sentinel.

Sentinel is a rank used by the East Coast division, ranking between paladin and elder. The only known member of the Brotherhood to have achieved this rank at the time of Fallout 3 is Sarah Lyons, who leads the Lyons' Pride elite unit. The Sole Survivor can also attain this rank if he or she completes the Brotherhood main questline.

Based on dialogue with Elder Maxson at the end of Fallout 4, sentinels do not require orders and usually conduct operations at their own will. Maxson states that the Sole Survivor is the only member of the Brotherhood of Steel that currently holds this title and it has been some years since the last sentinel served under him.Head PaladinThe head paladin is responsible for dealing with the paladins in the same way the head knight does, but the head paladin chooses which paladins should lead each knight squad and which areas may prove to be suitable HQ's. The head paladin holds meetings with the high elder, elders, head scribe, generals and head knight. Both the head knight and head paladin report to the high elder and generals, no one else.

The head paladin and knight don't tend to go out into the field of battle, although they may in critical circumstances. When they do enter a battle it is almost certain that they will have a huge army protecting them and will very rarely be seen on the front line, they normally sit back with the generals and help plan strategic maneuvers.Head KnightThe head knight is responsible for allocating knights to missions ( i.e. To defend bases or to secure areas of interest.) The head knight is also responsible for reporting all incidents involving the knights to the generals, elders or high elder (depending on the severity of the situation.) The head knights are also present at meetings with the high elder, elders, head scribe, generals and head paladin, like knight commanders and knight captains in the Midwestern and East Coast branches.InquisitorElite special forces and an acting detective service within brotherhood territory.

An inquisitor is a special rank of the Midwest Brotherhood, and they are usually extremely sadistic. They're in charge of interrogation and intelligence within the Brotherhood, and are not restricted by much of the Brotherhood's code when it comes to their job.

The inquisitors appear in Fallout Tactics in Barnaky's alternate ending and were to appear in Fallout Tactics 2, the canceled sequel.Paladin CommanderPaladin commanders lead squads (if not battalions) in the East Coast, and are well respected among the Brotherhood's ranks. They are scarcely found in the field, often planning with the other commanders in the Brotherhood, but when they are, they are a force to be reckoned with, often found with powerful energy weapons and leading huge forces. They rank only below star paladin, sentinel and elder.Knight CommanderKnight commanders are often seen in the field leading shock troopers dropped off of Vertibirds, or in charge of a command post in the Commonwealth, leading lower ranking knights into battle. Being the highest ranked field knight, they are accountable to no one but the head knight, head paladin, sentinel and elder.Star PaladinStar paladins are paladins who have been recognized by the Brotherhood for their honor, tenacity in battle, and loyalty to the Brotherhood. They are a separate caste (similar to sentinel) in that they are free from the chain of command, although they are not given as much freedom as a sentinel would.

The only star paladin encountered in Fallout 3 is Star Paladin Cross, and it is mentioned Elder Owyn Lyons was a star paladin before he was promoted to elder. In Fallout 4, star paladins can be seen guarding Liberty Prime's construction platform, and they can be seen out in the field at checkpoints in the southern area of the Commonwealth if the Sole Survivor has completed Ad Victoriam.

Star paladins will continuously level with the player character.Paladin LordPaladin lords are paladins who lead special operations outside of the main Brotherhood of Steel military. They only report to the high elder and head paladin.

The

Their operations are sometimes kept secret from the generals, because they often clash with Brotherhood military regulations. They are given specially selected squads that will follow the paladin lords without question, and are forbidden to talk about their missions to other members of the Brotherhood.Knight Captain. Knight sergeant is a rank used by the East Coast branch, denoting a position above paladin and below knight captain. The rank gives a command of two to three squads of knights and paladins, as well as the command of a base or outpost like the GNR building plaza. Knight Sergeant Wilks and Knight-Sergeant Dawes are the only Brotherhood of Steel soldiers known to acquire this rank.Senior PaladinSenior paladins are paladins which show promise to become paladin commanders, paladin lords or sentinels. They are very well respected among other paladins and knights and can increase the morale of soldiers greatly.Senior KnightSenior knights are knights which show promise to move up to be paladins, knight commanders or knight captains.

They are very well respected among the other knights, and in the western Brotherhood of Steel they are some of the top mechanics and engineers. An example of a senior knight is Lorenzo from Fallout: New Vegas.Paladin.

Paladins are a class of members of the Brotherhood of Steel. They are likened to the scribes of the Brotherhood as being on the same level, but with a different purpose. They are the protectors of the Brotherhood, fighting and protecting its interests across the wasteland, equipped with power armor and an array of lethal weapons. In Fallout: New Vegas, The Courier becomes a paladin after the quest 'Eyesight to the Blind' is complete.

Paladins in Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 are considered the elite versions of the knight. As mentioned in Chris Avellone's Fallout Bible 8, 'the scribes develop technology, the knights build it, and the paladins use it.' Contrary to the original Brotherhood, Owyn Lyons has changed the rank system - Paladins are no longer a separate caste, but a rank (albeit a high one) instead.Operations OfficerThe only known person of this rank is Operations Officer Edwards in Fallout 3.Knight. Knights are responsible for manufacturing and repairing the weapons and other pieces of technology.

After many years of service and experience, the best knights are promoted to paladins - the pinnacle of the Brotherhood military. The next rank is senior knight, and finally the leader of the order is the head knight. As all paladins are also knights, the head paladin is usually also the head knight.

Knights wear mostly power armor. The large gear in the Brotherhood of Steel symbol represents the knights. In the East Coast and Midwestern divisions, 'knight' is a strictly military rank and the scribes are the ones responsible for manufacturing technology there. This rank is most likely the equivalent of real-life non-commissioned officers (corporal to sergeant). The Lone Wanderer becomes a knight after the quest Take it Back! Is completed if the Broken Steel add-on is installed for Fallout 3. Although knights are typically required to train as initiates, it appears that this can be waived at the Elder's discretion as Elder Lyons directly appoints the Lone Wanderer as a knight. Lyons even states that he will 'circumvent our standard recruitment procedures' in the Wanderer's case.Junior KnightNot much is known about this rank only that it is higher than journeyman knight.Jounreymen KnightJourneymen knight is the one small step rank before becoming a full fledged knight.

It is where an initiate decides after their advancement whether to continue as a knight or scribe. It is an important step in advancement as they continue to serve the Brotherhood.Senior SquireSenior squires are squires which are ready to become knights and are taught all the requirements and oaths to be a knight of the Brotherhood of Steel.SquireThe only member of the East Coast branch who holds this rank in 2277 is Arthur Maxson. It is possible that this rank is used similarly in the original Lost Hills Brotherhood. Squire was originally a title which ranked above initiates and were to receive training out in the field unlike the initiates.By 2287, the East Coast branch of the Brotherhood has adopted the rank of squire as a title for children who have joined the Brotherhood. These children are not allowed into combat, instead performing errands and menial labor for the Brotherhood's military, and are provided with training and education in return. These children also appear to be heavily conditioned by propaganda, with those aboard The Prydwen claiming not to fear death and possessing an almost religious devotion to the Brotherhood.Squires are occasionally taken out as observers on sweep and clean missions led by high ranking members of the Brotherhood.

Lancer Captain Kells bestows such a responsibility upon the Sole Survivor in the repeatable quest Leading by Example, the squire does not partake in the fighting and is merely there to witness the proper techniques of exterminating vermin from the Commonwealth.Senior InitiatesSenior initiates are initiates which have completed basic training and move on to more advanced training.Initiate. Initiate is one of the lowest ranks in the Brotherhood of Steel's rank system. The precise definition of the rank appears to vary between the regional chapters. The West Coast division uses the term to indicate a mere trainee as having been initiated into the Brotherhood, whereas the other two reserve that title until the recruit has completed initial training. The most plausible explanation lies in the fact that the West Coast division is significantly more insular than the others; the bulk of its new recruits are the offspring of existing members, and only rarely are outsiders accepted into the organization. By contrast, circumstances have forced the other two divisions to actively recruit from among the local population. Both the West Coast and Midwestern divisions divide the rank into 'buck' initiate and senior initiate. It is not known whether the East Coast division follows this practice. In the West Coast division, initiate is the base rank of one who has only just been accepted into the Brotherhood as a trainee. After completing initial training, initiates are slated to become either scribes or knights, and are promoted to apprentice in the appropriate branch.

Initiates on the West Coast were also not allowed to leave the Lost Hills Bunker and experience field combat. They would have to be promoted to squire before they could actually fight.Unlike in the other Brotherhood divisions, east coast initiates may even be issued power armor if their assignment merits it (as in the case of the ill-fated Initiate Reddin of the Lyons' Pride). They were also sent out into the field of battle to experience fighting the mutants for real, because of the low numbers of soldiers.Civilian Ranks By Level of PositionHead ScribeThe head scribe is the highest ranking civilian class of the Brotherhood of Steel. The head scribe is responsible for choosing which scribes work on which project and which scribes should be assigned to each order.

The head scribe also chooses the high scribes or proctors of each order and must also oversee the projects each order is working on. The head scribe is a highly intelligent person who has mastered the orders of the Sword, Shield and Quill, and may also take on a project of their own interest, as Head Scribe Rothchild did with the Liberty Prime Project. The head scribe is one of the people who must attend the meetings with the high elder, elder council, generals, head paladin and head knight. The head scribe reports to the high elder and Elder Council only.High ScribeThe high scribes are the proctors of the Orders. There are three high scribes: one of the Sword, Shield and Quill.

They oversee and approve of each project that the scribes in their order are working on and assign the proper scribes to the right projects. Each high scribe must report to the head scribe on each project and to get approval to move ahead with a new project. The high scribes often work on their own projects, which are usually completed very quickly because the high scribes can prioritize them and assign senior scribes to them. In some cases, high scribes have been called to meetings with the high elder and the Elder Council; The East Coast Brotherhood of Steel tend to have their three high scribes (Peabody, Jameson, and Bowditch) in every meeting with Elder Lyons. In 2287 when Elder Maxson brings the massive airship the Prydwen to the Commonwealth he brings three proctors with him.

They are Proctor Teagan of the Sword, Proctor Ingram of the Shield and Proctor Quinlan of the Quill.Senior ScribeSenior scribes are some of the most advanced scribes. They are always chosen for the most important projects and are the next in line to become proctors of orders when the old proctor retires or dies. They often take on the most promising journeyman scribes to be their apprentices and choose what order they should be in (usually, it is the same order that the senior scribe is in).

Senior scribes teach their apprentices everything they know and will continue to teach them until they are nearly senior scribes themselves. On rare occasions, the senior scribe will be promoted to head scribe and their apprentice to high scribe. When this occurs, the apprentice will be given special treatment and the elders usually separate the two to remove any impression of impropriety.

Two examples of senior scribes are Linda Schuler, from the Mojave Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel and Neriah from the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel.ScribeScribes are tasked with creating and keeping records of the technology used by the Brotherhood. The attitude of many scribes in the Brotherhood can be described as techno-centric. While a great number study history and culture, the majority of scribes focus their studies on subjects related to the acquisition, repair, or creation of technology. It is implied by the Fallout Tactics Manual that some scribes, at least in the Midwest chapter, organize themselves into unions similarly named to American labor unions.Journeymen ScribeJourneyman scribes are scribes-in-training. They are often taken in by one of the senior scribes and made apprentices, where they are then taught to be full scribes. If they are not apprenticed by a senior scribe, they are often chosen to work on projects that are very insignificant.

Journeyman scribes start off in no order but will either pick an order themselves, or their master will choose for them. One example is Veronica Santangelo, a journeyman scribe of the Mojave Wasteland Brotherhood of Steel, and a possible companion in Fallout: New Vegas. Share to.
